What Is it?

Picture
David Byrne is a Scottish-American musician and artist perhaps best known as a founding member and principal songwriter of the new wave band Talking Heads. Byrne has released his own solo projects on record, and worked in a variety of media, including film, photography, opera, and Internet-based projects.

Byrne’s What is It? - A series of images of mysterious objects with 3 multiple possibilities for identifying the object. Originally done to replace the advertising on a Tokyo subway train (J&R Line). In Japanese and English.

Steps to Follow

STEP ONE:
  • BRAINSTORM in your Photography Journal possible ideas for your 3 What is It photos.
  • Themes to consider: Recycled materials, the environment, food, clothing, any man-made object.

STEP TWO:
  • DRAW at least 3 different CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES displaying 3 different possible ideas first in paper, each should depict 3 separate What Is It text possibilities/concepts.

STEP THREE:
  • GET APPROVAL and photograph your imagery based on your conceptual sketches.

STEP FOUR:
  • ADD TEXT CHOICES to your images in Adobe Photoshop after taking your photos.

STEP FIVE:
REFLECT by answering the following questions on your finished work:
  1. What aspect of your finished work do you find most successful?
  2. What aspect of your finished work do you find least successful and why?
  3. If you had to complete this assignment again, what aspect would you change/improve on and why?
